Richard Baxter and the Leigh Art Trail

Richard Baxter is showing new work in the Leigh Art Trail. He writes:

"Richard Baxter will be selling work from his latest porcelain kiln firings. Refined forms and stunning glazes, not to be missed.

Sheila Appleton is showing colourful, vigorous oil paintings, watercolours and acrylics and telling stories to entertain and inspire you.

We are also proud to be showing a retrospective of the late Alec Owen’s turned wooden bowls. He showed here for several years at the Art Trail.

Please come to Old Leigh Studios, 61 High Street, Old Leigh to see our shows. Open 16-23rd June (except Monday 18th) 11am – 5pm. Thursday 21st is our late evening when we will be open from 6-9pm and a cool refreshing drink may be had!"

Ceramics by Richard Baxter can be seen at the Contemporary Designer-Makers Fair this weekend at Highgate Literary and Scientific Institute. The Private View is on Friday 25th May, 6.00 - 8.30pm (no ticket needed). This is an inspirational selling show of work by designer-makers, at the border of art and craft. Up to 20 exhibitors, working with as wide a variety of materials as possible, will be displaying their work: jewellery, ceramics, quilts, fabrics, furniture, glass, book-binding, textiles, sculpture.

Harvey Bradley will give a painting demonstration and Mark Lewis and Jonathan Evens are giving art talks on Saturday 26th May at the Run with the Fire exhibition in the Strand Gallery (32 John Adam Street, London WC2N 6BP), as part of the Pentecost Festival. The full programme is:

• Painting demonstration – Harvey Bradley, ongoing throughout the day. See Harvey work on a painting and discuss his approach with him.
• The Spiritual Image in Modern Art - Mark Lewis, 11.30am. A broad overview of the spiritual impulse in the art forms of the modern world and their potential to turn our minds to higher things.
• Run with the Fire – Steve Scott, 12.30pm. A talk about the ‘Run with the Fire’ project and DVD.
• Stanley Spencer – A Visionary of our Time – Mark Lewis, 2.00pm. A talk which examines the life and work of one of Britain’s most renowned and eccentric 20th Century painters. The main themes include Spencer’s time as a war artist, and his extraordinary paintings which envision the Christian Gospels played out by the people in his beloved home town of Cookham.
• Praying with our eyes open – Glenn Lowcock, 3.00pm. A talk on using images as an aid to prayer.
• Emotional Tourist – Steve Scott, 4.00pm. What I am learning about art, life, spirituality, Trinity, and relational aesthetics from my travels in Bali and elsewhere.
• Christian influences on modern & contemporary art – Jonathan Evens, 5.00pm. A broad overview of modern and contemporary art and artists which engage with Christianity.

Colin Burns has an excellent new album out called Emerald & Gold with guitar pieces and songs. He can be heard playing at Caffe Nero, High Street, Southend, 6.00 - 8.00pm, Sunday 27th May.

“LOOKING INTO GLORY” is an exhibition of paintings, drawings and poems by Andrew Vessey from 30^th May – 17^th June, 2012 at Gallery Two, Wingfield Barns, Church Road, Wingfield, IP21 5RA (Tuesday – Saturday 10.00 am – 5.00 pm, Sunday 10.00 am – 4.00 pm). This solo exhibition includes an illustrated lecture by Andrew, a retired priest who previously trained in and taught fine art and art history. Entitled “Art, Imagination and God”, the Lecture will take place in the Gallery on Thursday 31^st May starting at 7.30pm.

Fade In Fade Out is the current exhibition at the Tokarska Gallery (until 9 June). Artist and painter, Kathleen Mullaniff, has a second obsession. An obsession which is at once attached to and envelope her small studio. The visitor is invited into the garden, and eventually through a garland of soft winter hues that surround the entrance to her studio. The borders are dormant now. But cross the threshold into the studio and these same sleeping winter colours are revealed through line and mark, in a series of pristine canvases. Marianne North would recognize the samples of seedpods, branches, twigs, dried petals and leaves imported into the studio from the garden, the salvaged fragments that form the still life source for this series of immaculate paintings. The local girl, intrepid explorer and botanist and the inspiration for Kathleen’s new body of work, collected her specimens from the furthest reaches of the natural world. Her expansive travel and analytical account of the exotic, compliments Kathleen’s newest work where stepping into the garden, has re-envigorated and affirmed the notion of place, the local close up, an intimate commune with the melancholy of change, the micro into the macro, William Blake’s ‘world in a grain of sand’.

Richard Baxter: 'Hoard'

Having been involved in the Leigh Art Trail, Richard Baxter is now exhibiting in Artside 2011.
Baxter's work entitled Hoard at the Southend Museum involves a spherical goldfish bowl filled with water and several dry but unfired pots relating to the timeline of the history of pottery making. These pots are facsimiles of ones on show in the museum which were all made or found in the Southend area.
Each day one pot is immersed in the bowl and allowed to dissolve back into mud. Each pot contains ‘treasure’ (kept in bank cash bags) which is revealed as the pot breaks down. Each successive pot represents a later time period, and may be in a different clay colour to result in stratification of the sediment.

Safety Helmets Must Be Worn

Richard Baxter is taking part in the exhibevent Safety Helmets Must Be Worn at Artistsmeet.

Safety Helmets Must Be Work explores how sketchbooks inform and develop creativity and practice by exploring the construction of a sketchbook through the metaphor of building and construction work via the channelling of tunnels, laying foundations and embedding of networks. Artists Books, sketchbooks, and all compass points between are explored and presented: log book, journal, an engine room, a place to store ideas, images, artefacts, experiences and memories, a place of exploration. This exhibition aims to explore a newly-recognised and rapidly expanding genre of artwork.

Richard's contribution is three little sketchbooks described as follows:

"CODEX 1-3

Starting on January 1st 2010 I did one drawing a day, and continued every day for the whole year in 3 tiny sketchbooks. This was not conceived as an artwork. I am a potter so some drawings reflect my work. I decided to display the books pegged together to form a circle suggesting the turning of the year. (What a shame that there are 360 degrees but 365 days to go around the year)."

Richard also writes: "I see drawing as an engine-house for the generation of new ideas, so this was the first time that I had made a promise to myself to draw for it’s own sake, and to do it relentlessly every day, no matter how little time I had, or how important or trivial the subject depicted. It became a habit and a discipline. It was a process of taking stock, and finding out for myself what I am interested in, and how I am able to record it."

Artistsmeet  is a critique group for artists to meet and discuss artwork, ideas and exhibitions, to provide a structured, regular, live forum where artists can meet, exchange and evolve together.

Richard's work is also newly on sale at the Craft Centre and Design Gallery in Leeds.

Colin Burns and Viki Isherwood-Metzler belong to a group of artists called ClubUrban who are holding an exhibition of paintings on the theme of Genesis from Monday 8th -Saturday 13th November. There is a particular invite to the Thursday evening exhibition event (11th November) when there will be artists talks and live music - including Colin Burns on guitar. This event is from 6.30pm onwards.

There is also the opening night on Monday 8th from 5.30pm - 9.00 pm. The other exhibition times are Tuesday - Saturday 11.00 am - 4.30pm. Colin Burns will be at the exhibition on the Monday and Thursday evenings and daytime Saturday. There are some 15 artists exhibiting. Faith and Image is a forum for all who are interested in art and spirituality. The Winter Selling Exhibition by members of Anglian Potters will feature the work of c4m artists, Harvey Bradley and Richard Baxter. The exhibition is from Saturday 13 November to Sunday 12 December 2010,
10am to 4pm, every day, including Sunday. All welcome. All Saints' Church, Jesus Lane, Cambridge.

Anglian Potters return to their usual winter venue for a selling exhibition of work by our members. A perfect opportunity for Christmas shoppers to buy something unique and special. All Saints' Church is owned by the Churches Conservation Trust, which has restored the interior and its extraordinary Pre-Raphaelite wall decorations over the last few years. These make a unique setting for the varied selection of ceramics, ranging from teapots, mugs and vases to sculpture, animals, jewellery or pots for the garden.

Directions: The church is opposite Jesus College, on Jesus Lane, Cambridge. The closest parking is either at a parking meter on the street outside, in Park Street multi-storey, or in the Newmarket Road Grafton Centre car park. Alternatively, try Cambridge Park and Ride.

Peacing Together One World performance evening

Our Peacing Together One World performance evening at St Mary Magdalene Billericay was a tremendous time with excellent readings of poems from a selection of significant poets (from John Donne to Stewart Henderson) by Michael Creasey and Keith Harman. Original poetry was provided by Pam Adams, Anne Creasey, Jonathan Evens, Helen Gould, and Eileen Mayer. Jonathan Evens also read poetry and showed images by Alan Hitching and introduced a visual presentation of his meditations combined with images by Henry Shelton under the heading Mark of the Cross. Colin Burns ended both sections of the evening with his engaging and varied guitar instrumentals.

The above photographs also show some the additional exhibitions works to those shown in the earlier selection of photographs, including works by Richard Baxter, Joy Rousell Stone and Vicky Woodford. 

Following on from showing work in the Peacing Together One World exhiition, Joy Rousell Stone has a one week one person exhibition at St Nicholas Rawreth which begins tomorrow (Monday 25th October). Click here for more details.  

Peacing Together One World exhibition

commission4mission's Peacing Together One World exhibition at St Mary Magdalene Billericay (High Road, Billericay, Essex) opens tomorrow and can be viewed until Saturday 23rd October (9.00am - 5.00pm). This varied show includes drawings, glasswork, paintings, photography, pottery, sculpture, and a wood relief. It features the work by Richard Baxter, Harvey Bradley, Colin Burns, Anne Creasey, Michael Creasey, Elizabeth Duncan Meyer, Jonathan Evens, Alan Hitching, Mark Lewis, Caroline Richardson, Joy Rousell Stone, Henry Shelton, Sergiy Shkanov and Peter Webb.

Harvey Bradley, who has organised the show, will be artist-in-residence throughout the exhibition. He will be demonstrating his approach to painting and will be happy to talk with visitors about the exhibition and commission4mission.

Several events are happening during the exhibition including a cake sale on Saturday 16th, a communion service on Wednesday 20th (10.00am) and the Peacing Together One World performance evening on Friday 22nd October, 7.30pm, which will feature poetry readings, original poetry, meditations, images, and music from Colin Burns, Anne Creasey, Michael Creasey, Jonathan Evens, Keith Harman, and Alan Hitching.
