Art for Easter Sunday and beyond

The panoramas above show the colour columns that Robert Enoch installed at St Paul's Harlow from Easter Sunday onwards. Robert's installation is the first initiative in what we hope will be a developing relationship with the church from which a range of arts initiatives may develop. In the next development Robert and Jonathan Evens will contribute to an arts-related service at St Paul's on 3rd July.

Also on display from Easter Sunday has been Adam Boulter's The Resurrection at St Mary Aldermary. Adam's modern reinterpretation of the Stations of the Cross enabled reflection and prayer prior to Easter Sunday but without the 14th resurrection station, which has been on display from Easter Sunday onwards. A podcast of Adam talking with Ian Mobsby about the display can be downloaded from here. In this podcast, Ian and Adam explore the importance of art in spirituality, and the tradition of stations of the cross.

Adam Boulter

The prologue to John: yet the world did not know him, Monoprint on paper 8"x10"
Jesus is Made to Bear His Cross, 11"x15", Oil
Adam Boulter writes:

"My work has two dominant tensions. The first is between the abstract and the figurative, where we work out if the world is as we see it and find out how we make the world seem to our selves. The second is between the exterior space where we encounter others and the world, and the interior space where we encounter ourselves. I have found that the tension and space created by these two sets of tensions forces me to notice God. Much of my work has revolved around landscape and religious themes. It is concerned with a sense of belonging and of the sacred in places as diverse as the inner-city and deserts, and in ancient stories, myths and sacred texts."

Exhibition: Grace & Passion

commission4mission's next exhibition will be during Passiontide (21st - 28th March) and will be held at St Laurence’s Upminster. Entitled Grace & Passion, the exhibition's centrepiece will be the first showing of a new set of Stations of the Cross by Rosalind Hore. The Stations of the Cross have been a big influence on her and her work. Each of her Stations feature three rose buds as a sign of the Trinity.

Rosalind, whose Pieta can also be seen at St Laurence, also has work at St Mary's Goring-by-Sea and, later this year, her Baptism of Jesus will be installed at St Edmund's Tyseley through a commission4mission commission. Rosalind seeks to express exaggerated emotion in her work through the use of elongated stylized figures, strong colour and sweeping folds, which exaggerate both movement and emotion. She uses Christian symbols frequently in her paintings; flames, waters of baptism, doves, cross etc.

Also featuring in the exhibition will be work by commission4mission artists: Adam Boulter, Colin Burns, Ally Clarke, Ann Creasey, Michael Creasey, Valerie Dean, Jonathan Evens, Rosalind Hore, Mark Lewis, Nadiya Pavliv, Caroline Richardson, Joy Rousell Stone, Henry Shelton, and Peter Webb. The exhibition will be the first opportunity to see work by our newest members, Adam Boulter, Ally Clarke, Nadiya Pavliv and Valerie Dean, in a commission4mission exhibition.
