Members update: Harvey Bradley

Work by Harvey Bradley can be seen at the Maeldune Heritage Centre in Maldon until 12 November. Harvey is one of several guest potters selected by fellow member of Anglian Potters, Peter Deans.

Harvey will also have work in the Anglian Potters Christmas Show at All Saints Church, Jesus Lane, Cambridge from 16 November to 15 December.

Member's update

An exhibition of 'Stations of the Cross' by Valerie Dean is currently at the Diocesan Office for the Chelmsford Diocese (53 New Road, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 1AT). Valerie's 'Stations' will be in the Boardroom at Guy Harlings until Friday 26th June. Visits are by arrangement during normal office hours, as the boardroom is in regular use. Please check access before you visit by ringing 01245 294400. Valerie is also exhibiting in Brussels during June.

Harvey Bradley is planning this year's Billericay Art Trail (http://www.billericayarttrail.co.uk/) and has included input from various c4m members.  The Big Draw is at Norsey Wood (http://www.basildon.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=2410) with Mark Lewis and Peter Webb plus Joanna Bradley, Harvey Bradley, Dezadie and Julia Tanner (Saturday 20th July, 10am - 3pm). Arts Evening at St. Mary Magdalen (http://www.billericaychurches.org/html/st_mary_magdalen.html) with Tim Cunningham & Jonathan Evens (poetry), Colin Burns (music) and Dezadie (animations) plus a dance group and projected images from the Big Draw (Saturday 20th July, 7:30pm - 10pm).

Harvey is currently showing in an exhibition of work by selected members of ‘Anglian Potters’ at the Dolby Gallery Oundle (http://www.dolby-gallery.com/anglian-potters-selected-members-show-5-20-june-2013/) - until 29th June. 

The current show at the Tokarska Gallery (http://tokarskagallery.co.uk/current-exhibitions) has paintings by Sharon Drew which are modern-day Abstract Expressionism reinvented for the 21st Century. Imagine repeat-patterns disrupted by the gestural brushwork of American Artist De Kooning and the vivid hues of St Ives School British Painter, Patrick Heron. This show continues until 30th June.

Harvey Bradley is exhibiting in Potters In Jesus, the Christmas Selling Exhibition of Anglian Potters at All Saints Church, Jesus Lane, Cambridge until Sunday 16th December. Opening 10am - 4 pm Mon - Sat, 12 - 4pm Sunday.

Additionally, we have recently agreed a licence for use of an image of Harvey's Nativity painting by New Covenant Christian Community Church (Bethlehem Pennsylvania) in their Christmas Eve publicity and service.

Harvey Bradley is showing work in the Anglian Potters exhibition at the Ickworth Wood Sale and Craft Fair this weekend. This a great weekend at Ickworth House as woodcraft and craft professionals come together to sell and display their work. An opportunity to buy stunning items of furniture, gifts, treats and much more. With loads of stalls, live music, real ale, story tellers, steam engine, Anglian potters with Raku firing, local food and lots of fun for the whole family.

Harvey Bradley is exhibiting "striking designs of containers and bowls" in the latest Anglian Potters exhibition at the Reunion Gallery in Felixstowe. "It is the Group’s (and many of the artists) first foray into Felixstowe and seventeen potters were ‘on fire’ to show their works in this exhibition. It is Reunion Gallery’s first all ceramic exhibition and the works have transformed the gallery space into a pottery heaven!" The exhibition runs until 20^th October 2012, Tuesday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Pottery by Harvey Bradley can currently be seen at the Anglian Potters Summer Selling Exhibition 2012, The Old Library, Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Private View at 6.30 p.m. on Saturday 18th August, then runs from Sunday 19th August through to the last day Wednesday 5th September. Opening times: Mondays to Saturdays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Harvey's workshop is dedicated to working with porcelain with the challenge of the whiter body and the potentially smoother, glasslike, qualities that this more expensive clay offers.

Pentecost Festival exhibition: Saturday programme

Here is the event programme for Saturday 26^th May at our Run with the Fire exhibition for the Pentecost Festival (Strand Gallery, 22nd - 27th May, 11.00am – 6.00pm):

·         Painting demonstration – Harvey Bradley, ongoing throughout the day. See Harvey work on a painting and discuss his approach with him.

·         The Spiritual Image in Modern Art - Mark Lewis, 11.30am. A broad overview of the spiritual impulse in the art forms of the modern world and their potential to turn our minds to higher things.

·         Run with the Fire – Steve Scott, 12.30pm. A talk about the ‘Run with the Fire’ project and DVD.

·         Stanley Spencer – A Visionary of our Time – Mark Lewis, 2.00pm. A talk which examines the life and work of one of Britain’s most renowned and eccentric 20^th Century painters. The main themes include Spencer’s time as a war artist, and his extraordinary paintings which envision the Christian Gospels played out by the people in his beloved home town of Cookham.

·         Praying with our eyes open – Glenn Lowcock, 3.00pm. A talk on using images as an aid to prayer.

·         Emotional Tourist – Steve Scott, 4.00pm. What I am learning about art, life, spirituality, Trinity, and relational aesthetics from my travels in Bali and elsewhere.

·         Christian influences on modern & contemporary art – Jonathan Evens, 5.00pm. A broad overview of modern and contemporary art and artists which engage with Christianity.

Harvey Bradley is a potter and painter who is a membership both of Anglian Potters and commission4mission. Mark Lewis is an artist, silversmith, Fine Arts lecturer, and member of commission4mission. Steve Scott is a writer, poet, musician, and the facilitator of the Christian Artist’s Networking Association (CANA). Glenn Lowcock is an artist and illustrator who is also a member of the Secular Franciscan Order. Jonathan Evens is an artist and writer who is also a priest in East London and the secretary of commission4mission.

Update: Harvey Bradley

Harvey Bradley will be exhibiting with Anglian Potters this weekend (8th and 9th October) at the Ickworth House Wood Sale and Craft Fair. 20 Anglian Potters are taking part in the Fair, which includes raku, throwing and hand building demonstrations, and children's activities.

The vase above is from a recent firing and is in memory of Jenny, an active member of Emmanuel Church, Billericay, who was killed in a tragic traffic accident in Suffolk.


Update: Member's exhibitions

Harvey Bradley will be showing work in the selected members exhibition organised by Anglian Potters at the Dolby Gallery (Oundle, nr Peterborough) from 6th - 21st May. This exhibition of pottery and ceramics includes work by: Jane Barker, Deborah Baynes, Robert Bibby, Harvey Bradley, Susan Cupitt, Margaret Gardiner,Helen Humphreys, Lorraine Izon, Victor Knibbs, Frank Logan, Sonia Lewis, Helen Martino, Stephen Murfitt, John Masterton, Colin Saunders, Ursula Stroeh-Rubens, Lola Swain and Katherine Winfrey.

Adam Boulter will be showing Paintings and Watercolours at Chez Manny, Battersea High St. SW11 3JS from Thursday 12th May till mid June. His show is viewable during the restaurant's opening hours.

Peter Webb is currently showing in the exhibition organised by the National Society of Painters, Sculptors and Printmakers, Monday 25 April – Sunday 8 May, at the Crypt Gallery, St Martin-in-the-Fields. Displaying a delight in the visual world and a fascination with its depiction, this exhibition by members of the society shows the typically wide variety of approach, technique and content fostered by its members.

Lost and Found an exhibition of cityscapes by Ukrainian-born artist and gallery founder Nadiya Pavliv-Tokarska exploring existential and psychological states in painting between abstraction and representation continues at the Tokarska Gallery.

Colours & Stations of the Cross (2)

Colours & Stations of the Cross is a commission4mission exhibition at All Saints Maldon: Saturday 16th – Friday 22nd April 2011, 10.00am – 4.00pm.

Colours & Stations of the Cross features Stations of the Cross by Rosalind Hore combined with pottery by Harvey Bradley. Harvey's pottery has been designed to complement Rosalind's Stations through its use of colour.

Rosalind Hore

Rosalind Hore is a sculptor and painter of Christian subjects – Christ figures, nativity sets, Ecce Homo, Stations of the Cross etc. She works in clay, plaster, concrete (figures can also be bronze cast at the foundry). Her paintings are mostly in acrylic of the events in the life of Christ. Her work can currently be seen St Edmund Tyseley, St Laurence Upminster, and St Mary Goring-by-Sea. Rosalind seeks to express exaggerated emotion in her work through the use of elongated stylized figures, strong colour and sweeping folds, which exaggerate both movement and emotion.

All these characteristics of her work are apparent in these Stations of the Cross. The Stations of the Cross have been a big influence on her and her work. For this series she has used the traditional sequence of 14 pictures or sculptures depicting the following scenes:

1. Jesus is condemned to death
2. Jesus is given his cross
3. Jesus falls the first time
4. Jesus meets His Mother
5. Simon of Cyrene carries the cross
6. Veronica wipes the face of Jesus
7. Jesus falls the second time
8. Jesus meets the daughters of Jerusalem
9. Jesus falls the third time
10. Jesus is stripped of His garments
11. Crucifixion: Jesus is nailed to the cross
12. Jesus dies on the cross
13. Jesus' body is removed from the cross (Deposition or Lamentation)
14. Jesus is laid in the tomb and covered in incense.

Although not traditionally part of the Stations, the Resurrection of Jesus, as is common nowadays, has been included as a fifteenth station. Each of the Stations in this series are 34 x 42 inches, painted in acrylics, and feature three rose buds as a sign of the Trinity.
Harvey Bradley

Trained as a designer, Harvey Bradley is a long standing and selected member of Anglian Potters – a prestigious association that exhibits members work in such venues as Ely Cathedral, All Saints (Jesus Lane) and Emmanuel College in Cambridge. As well as contributing to these, Harvey has shown work at Chichester Cathedral, Spring Harvest, New Wine and Greenbelt with the Christian arts group Veritasse.

Harvey’s pottery series uses a new sequence for the Stations of the Cross, as follows:

6 Jesus is scourged and crowned with thorns – ochre, red and black
earthly vengeance on a passive form

7 Jesus takes up His cross – red, yellow and black
the carpenter lifts His earthly gift and transforms a crooked symbol

practical love breaks through a tyranny of hopelessness and hate

Colin Burns and Viki Isherwood-Metzler belong to a group of artists called ClubUrban who are holding an exhibition of paintings on the theme of Genesis from Monday 8th -Saturday 13th November. There is a particular invite to the Thursday evening exhibition event (11th November) when there will be artists talks and live music - including Colin Burns on guitar. This event is from 6.30pm onwards.

There is also the opening night on Monday 8th from 5.30pm - 9.00 pm. The other exhibition times are Tuesday - Saturday 11.00 am - 4.30pm. Colin Burns will be at the exhibition on the Monday and Thursday evenings and daytime Saturday. There are some 15 artists exhibiting. Faith and Image is a forum for all who are interested in art and spirituality. The Winter Selling Exhibition by members of Anglian Potters will feature the work of c4m artists, Harvey Bradley and Richard Baxter. The exhibition is from Saturday 13 November to Sunday 12 December 2010,

Anglian Potters return to their usual winter venue for a selling exhibition of work by our members. A perfect opportunity for Christmas shoppers to buy something unique and special. All Saints' Church is owned by the Churches Conservation Trust, which has restored the interior and its extraordinary Pre-Raphaelite wall decorations over the last few years. These make a unique setting for the varied selection of ceramics, ranging from teapots, mugs and vases to sculpture, animals, jewellery or pots for the garden.

Directions: The church is opposite Jesus College, on Jesus Lane, Cambridge. The closest parking is either at a parking meter on the street outside, in Park Street multi-storey, or in the Newmarket Road Grafton Centre car park. Alternatively, try Cambridge Park and Ride.

Peter Webb is currently exhibiting in the Spring exhibition of the National Society of Painters, Sculptors & Printmakers held in the Crypt of St Martin-in-the-Fields until 1st May.

The Illumined Way by Colin Burns features in From the Darkness ... light in contemporary art, a Brighton Festival Fringe exhibition (1 May – 23 May 2010) at Little St Peter's Church, Preston Park, Brighton.The curator of the exhibition is Nathaniel Hepburn, from Mascalls Gallery in Paddock Wood, West Kent. ‘From the Darkness’ is one of a series of exhibitions from Brighton to Canterbury including works by major international artists including Graham Sutherland, Stanley Spencer, Marc Chagall and Maggi Hambling.

The next Faith & Image event is The Spiritual Power of Drawing, an illustrated talk by Mark Lewis, exploring the drawings of the Renaissance period. There is no charge for this event, which will be held on Tuesday May 11th. 8.00pm, in the Gwinnell Room at St Mary's Woodford, but donations are welcome. Mark's talk will be followed on Friday, May 14th. at 10.30am by a visit to the British Museum to see the major exhibition: Fra Angelico to Leonardo: Italian Renaissance drawings. Meet on the steps of the main entrance of the British Museum, if you wish to attend.

Sarah Ollerenshaw currently features in the opening exhibition at The Moreton Gallery, which aims to promote the work of both established and emerging artists, showcasing talent particularly from the UK but also from around the world. Sarah is planning towards a solo show at St Peter’s Notting Hill and anticipates her work being included in Icon? The Art of Faith at Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery in the autumn. She has started Alder Fine Art with Emma Forrester to showcase their own work and to promote other quality, established and emerging artists. Alder Fine Art plan to be at the Cambridge Art Fair in June and Edinburgh Art Fair in November.

St John's Seven Kings is organising an Art & Music workshop on Saturday 29th May from 2.00 - 5.00pm. This workshop has been organised with local churches in preparation for this year's Our Community Festival and is open to all. The art workshop will be led by Mark Lewis and Peter Webb and will involve portrait and landscape drawing on the theme of local people and places. These will then be collaged into larger displays to be exhibited at St Paul's Goodmayes in the week of, and on the day of, the Our Community Festival. The music workshop will gather together and rehearse a singing group able to perform at the Our Community Festival. This workshop is being organised by Rev. Geoff Eze, curate at St John's Seven Kings. The art workshop is on a drop-in basis while, for the music workshop, we need participants to come at 2.00pm and remain for the whole session.

Valerie Dean will be having an exhibition of her paintings together with photographs by her husband Roger Dean in London during the month of June. The exhibition will be held at Pages of Hackney, 70 Lower Clapton Road, Hackney E5 0RN. There will be a private view on Saturday, 5 June from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and they should be very happy to see you there. The exhibition will also be open in June during shop hours, which are Monday to Friday 11am - 7pm, Saturday 11am - 6pm and Sunday noon - 6pm. They look forward to seeing as many of us as possible at the private view. Valerie and Roger's work was recently seen together in a show of 16 Swale artists held at the Horsebridge Arts & Community Centre in Whitstable.

Current journalism from Jonathan Evens includes a obituary for the artist John Reilly in the Church Times, a review of the Resurrection exhibition at Bury St Edmonds to be published in the next edition of Art & Christianity, a response to an Artz Ville article on the Arts Centre Group website, and an interview with Catharine Pusey (then of the Employer's Forum on Belief) in the current edition of the Faith in Business Quarterly.

Harvey Bradley will be contributing work to the summer selling exhibition of work by members of Anglian Potters from Saturday 14 August to Wednesday 1 September in the Old Library, Emmanuel College, Cambridge. The exhibition will be open from 10am to 5pm (TBC). All are welcome, there is no admission charge. This will be an exhibition of work by over 50 members with the work on show covering the entire spectrum of ceramic art and pottery made in the region. Harvey is also involved with the Anglian Potters marquee at the Ickworth Park Wood Sale & Craft Fair, Ickworth Park Gardens on Saturday & Sunday 9 & 10th October.

Harvey Bradley

Harvey Bradley writes:

"There is something exciting about taking dull, grey, ash from the burning of wood and using it on pottery, particularly porcelain, to form colourful glazed surfaces. To me this transformation process is meaningful. We use a jug for baptisms at our church on which the ash (symbol of repentance) after being fired to 1260 C has become a textural gold colour (an encouraging warm earthy gold). Colours like this can lift the spirit.

Over the years pottery has been my chosen craft. Increasingly however I like to draw and paint as well. Generally my pottery tends to be functional – mainly domestic, with some ecclesiastical ware. My paintings are more reflective and open to prayerful interpretation. My recent plans are to bring aspects of these artistic activities closer together – enjoying the colourful use of wood ash glazes on porcelain whilst producing Conte pastel studies ready for my oil painting on canvas."

Harvey’s creative work includes: Stoneware and Porcelain pottery; Oil Paintings; and Designs for church banners, altar frontals, candlesticks, baptistery tiles and ecclesiastical commissions of various sorts. His designs tend to be illustrative, reflective and open to prayerful interpretation.
